TINY CONNECTICUT COTTAGE
A gravel path winds its way to the front porch of this shingled cottage with green shutters and blue doors. The cottage is located in Madison, a seaside community midway along Connecticut’s shoreline.

From the porch, you enter into the kitchen end of the open-plan living space that occupies the front half of the 400 ft2 (37.2 m2) floor plan.

The cottage was originally built in 1943 and renovated since then. At some point the attic floor was removed to create a vaulted ceiling over the main living space, emphasized by an octagonal window at the peak of the gable wall.

The bathroom and the bedroom are in the back corners, opening off the hallway between them. When the ceiling was raised, the attic over the back of the cottage became a loft open to the living room. With no railings in place when these photos were taken, the loft may just be used for storage, but it looks like it could easily be a second bedroom.

The Dutch door at the back of the cottage takes you to a patio bordered by a low stone wall. Although the lot is relatively small at 0.15 acres, the backyard is surrounded by trees and seems pretty private.
