Study
The Kennett River home has been built using 10 shipping containers and has been designed to have a low carbon footprint, whilst still incorporating luxury appliances and materials. We achieved a low carbon footprint by using a mix of low embodied energy materials and new materials.

The home is almost entirely off the grid, with the exception of electricity, as it uses rain water, solar power and its own septic system. The house has been designed for passive cooling and uses only hydronic heating. The building is sited with the main living spaces and large windows facing onto the Nth-Est orientation to maximise the use of solar energy.

Services included:

Working with the client from concept phase to build and design a holiday home that would last generations
Obtaining council planning permission
Obtaining a building permit
Managing all building works from foundations, to prefabricated, final finished and occupancy certificates.
The project was delivered as a culmination of simplicity in design, without compromising on detailed finishes and features -challenging the notion of a singular approach to blended construction styles.

Priority was given to sustainability, in terms of both the embodied energy of the project (via reusing shipping containers and recycled timber cladding) and minimising the ongoing environmental impact of the project (rainwater system, solar power generation, alternative air conditioning design, on-site green septic treatment and energy efficient design).

Eco-friendly design notes:

Solar power is used to generate power for the house, with mains connection hoped to be only a backup. The system is a 5kw Sungrow system with twenty 250W Lightway panels.
Rainwater is captured from the roof for use following filtration, with capacity for year-round supply. The roof is of BlueScope Australia's colorbond Ultra grade (suitable for severe marine environments) sheeting on lightweight trusses, which allows for water collection and double watertight protection for the home.
On-site sewerage treatment plant provides for a clean solution to living "off the grid", and also provides for a fertile backyard following treatment.
Cladding is predominantly eco-sensative, reconstituted timber, Australian owned and manufactured. The framing is Australian timber, milled locally from natural, non-plantation trees.
